TRIBE NOTES

SEVEN UP: The Indians have reeled off seven consecutive wins for the first time since June 5-11, 2015. Indy started that streak by winning the final three games of a four-game set at Lehigh Valley, then went on to win all three games of a series at Rochester before returning home to win the first game of a four-game series against Gwinnett.

NOT A SOFT 17: The Indians are 17-4 over their last 21 games, the best mark in professional baseball. Lehigh Valley, Indy’s next opponent, has the second-best record over its last 21 games at 16-5.

HERE’S WHY WE’RE COOKIN’: The Tribe have scored five or more runs in 15 of their last 21 contests, going 14-1 in those games. The Indians are 3-3 when scoring four or less in their last 21 games as well. While the offense has been potent, Indy’s pitching has held its own on the mound, posting a collective 2.88 ERA (59 ER in 184.1 IP) since April 29, when Indy’s 17-4 stretch began.

COME WHAT MAY: The Indians are 16-3 in the month of May with 10 games remaining before the calendar flips to June. In 2016, the Indians had one month where they won 16-plus games (June: 17-13). If the Indians can win at least four of their last 10 games, the Tribe will reach the 20-win mark in a single month for the seventh time since the beginning of the 1996 campaign. The last time an Indy club won 20 or more games in a single month came in April 2013 when they went 20-7.

KID IN THE CLUTCH: Austin Meadows delivered another clutch knock for the Tribe last night, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh. In the series finale Thursday at Columbus, Meadows belted a three-run home run in the eighth inning, helping Indy dig out from a 2-0 hole en route to a 4-2 victory. Last Sunday in the homestand finale against Norfolk, Meadows hit a bases-loaded walk-off single in the 11th inning to give the Tribe a 5-4 win.

TRIBE NOTES

GRAB A COUPLE SIXERS: With Indy’s doubleheader sweep yesterday, the Tribe have garnered their second six-game winning streak of the season (also: May 6-11). The last time an Indianapolis club had two or more six-game plus winning streaks in a single season was in 2012. That season, the Indians rattled off a seven-game winning streak from June 17-23, an eight-game winning streak from June 27-July 4 and a six-game winning streak from August 20-25. Indianapolis finished with a league-best 89-55 record that year before being bounced 3 games to 1 in the IL Governors’ Cup Semifinals by Charlotte.

COME WHAT MAY: The Indians are 15-3 in the month of May with 11 games remaining before the calendar flips to June. In 2016, the Indians had two months where they won 15-plus games (May: 15-14; June: 17-13). If the Indians can win at least five of their last 11 games, the Tribe will reach the 20-win mark in a single month for the seventh time in franchise history. The last time an Indy club won 20 or more games in a single month came in April 2013 when they went 20-7.

McKINNEY IN A PINCH: Playing their second doubleheader in the last four days, the Indians needed a spot starter for Game 2 last night, and it was right-hander Brett McKinney who made his first professional start in that game. Over four impressive innings, McKinney allowed just one hit — a two-out solo homer by Efren Navarro in the first inning. Following the blast, he retired the final 10 batters he faced before handing over to A.J. Schugel who eventually earned the win with two shutout frames in relief.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CLIMB: The Indians are four above .500 for the first time this season after last night’s doubleheader sweep. The Tribe last sat four games above .500 on July 15, 2016, after they defeated Louisville, 4-0, to move to 49-45. Last year, the Indians peaked at eight games above .500 when they were 39-31 on June 20.

CLAY RACKING UP THE K’S: Tribe starter Clay Holmes piled up another seven punchouts in Game 1 last night, giving him 7-plus strikeouts in five of his last six starts, the first time he’s done so in his career. Over his last six starts, he’s racked up 40 total strikeouts, the most in a six-start stretch for him in his entire career. His previous high for whiffs during a six-start span was 34 from June 16-July 15, 2016 with Double-A Altoona. He had a pair of nine-strikeout performances during that run.

TRIBE NOTES

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: The Indians continued their success in Columbus, taking the final four games of their five-game set to improve to 6-1 at Huntington Park in 2017. Indy’s three best records in Columbus came in 2000 (6-2) and 2012/2014 (8-3).

THAT WAS CLUTCH: Austin Meadows’ three-run homer in the eighth yesterday turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage for Indy. The homer was his second of 2017, with the other also occuring in the eighth inning on April 14 @ Toledo. He capped the Tribe’s last homestand with a bases-loaded walk-off single in the 11th inning, a 5-4 win over Norfolk.

NEARLY THREE YEARS TO THE DAY: Dan Runzler recorded the save yesterday in place of Edgar Santana who was limited to a single inning after throwing an inning on Wednesday night. Runzler worked a perfect ninth, giving him his first save nearly three years to the date; his last save prior to yesterday came on May 19, 2014 with Triple-A Fresno vs. Las Vegas at Chukchansi Park.

SO GOOD TO SEE YOU: Jason Rogers has found good success against Toledo in his two seasons with Indianapolis, batting a collective .313 (35-for-112) with six doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI in 29 games. This year, Rogers had led Indy’s offense against the Mud Hens, collecting a .344 average (11-for-32) with two doubles, two long balls and five RBI in eight contests.

YEAH, HE’S GOOD: Santana’s 0.39 ERA in second among pitchers in all of professional baseball who have made 15-plus appearances this season. Chicago Cubs closer Wade Davis is the only pitcher with those qualifications and a lower ERA than Santana. Davis has not allowed an earned run in 18 games in which he’s totaled 17.1 innings of work.

TRIBE NOTES

CHRIS IS CRUISING: Christopher Bostick has hit safely in each of his last 14 games. He extended his streak in the third inning last night with a single. He added another single in the seventh for good measure. During his hitting streak, he’s batting .390 (23-for-59) with six doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and 10 runs scored. His career-high hitting streak is 16 games, a stretch that ran from June 15-July 4, 2013 while he was with Single-A Beloit in the Athletics farm system. Last year, Alen Hanson and Josh Bell both notched team-best 14-game hitting streaks.

SPEAKING OF STREAKS: Bostick’s 14-game hitting streak is tied with Columbus’ Tyler Naquin for the longest such streak in the International League. Naquin’s streak began on April 14, while Bostick’s started on April 15.

BATS ARE WOKE: The Indians’ offense remained red hot, despite the off day on Monday. Over the last three games, the Indians have scored nine, six and eight runs, good for an average of 7.7 runs per game. They have also racked up 42 hits in those three contests combined, an average of 14.0 hits per game.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KID: The Indians provided Austin Meadows with an early birthday present with their big win last night. Meadows rewarded himself at the plate, driving in a team-best four RBI, three coming on a bases-clearing double during the Tribe’s five-run sixth inning. Meadows turned 22 years old today.

MARGIN FOR ERROR: Through Indy’s first 22 games, no win or loss margin had been greater than four runs. Last night’s 9-2 victory was the first deemed as a ‘comfortable’ lead for either side.
