INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) FBI Violent Crimes Task Force detectives identify a burglary suspect who is believed to be responsible for multiple burglaries across the city.
Detectives with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force were working on a series of burglaries that had occurred in Spanish Oaks apartments on Northeast (NE) District. Then on March 28th Detectives working the Spanish Oak apartment burglaries were contacted by Northwest District (NW) Detectives about a series of burglaries in apartments complexes on Northwest District. NW District Detectives had developed a possible suspect on a northwest burglary and had tracked the suspect’s vehicle to the Spanish Oaks apartment complex.
The burglaries on NE and NW Districts were very similar in how the suspect executed the burglaries. The detectives coordinated and a surveillance plan was put it in place to monitor the suspect. The surveillance was taking place on April 12, 2017, when at approximately 4:00 PM, it appeared the suspect was casing apartments in the Spanish Oaks apartment complex. Detectives followed the suspect as he entered multiple common hallway doors and casing the complexes. At approximately 7:00 PM the suspect allegedly committed a burglary in the 3600 block of Wingate Terrace and was observed by detectives carrying items away from the apartment. Officers were previously alerted to the suspects suspicious actions throughout the surveillance and were called to move in on the suspect. The suspect was apprehended after a foot pursuit through the apartment complex.
The homeowner was located and verified her apartment was burglarized. The stolen property was recovered in the suspect’s vehicle and returned to the victim. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Jeffery Laswell. Laswell was preliminarily charged with burglary. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision. The suspect was later transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking.
