TRIBE NOTES

THANK YOU, MAY: After a 7-15 April, the Indians posted a 21-8 record in the month of May, their first 21-win month since Aug. 1998, when they went 21-7. That year, the Tribe also went 21-9 in the month of June. The Tribe entered play on May 6 in fourth place in the IL West, five games back of Toledo. Entering play tonight, Indy has a 5.5-game lead in its division.

HE CAN SWING IT, TOO: Brault dualed as a pitcher and center fielder at Regis University (Denver, Colo.) for three seasons. He became the first student-athlete in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball history to be named first-team All-RMAC at two positions. As a professional, Brault is a lifetime .364 batter (12-for-33) with one double and two RBI. Last year, he went 3-for-9 with Indy and 2-for-8 while with Pittsburgh. In 2015, he clubbed seven hits in 16 at-bats, good for a .438 average.

IN A PINCH: Last night, both Joey Terdoslavich and Barrett Barnes recorded knocks in pinch-hit situations. So far this season, Indians batters have combined to bat .429 (3-for-7) in limited pinch-hit duties.

CAST YOUR VOTES: The IL released the top vote leaders for the 2017 Triple-A All-Star Game, and Indy was well-represented at every position with a player in the top four at each spot. Max Moroff (SS) and Christopher Bostick (OF) led their respective positions, while Elias Diaz (C), Jason Rogers (1B), Joey Terdoslavich (DH) and Tyler Eppler (SP) were second in their respective categories. Erich Weiss (2B), Eric Wood (3B), Austin Meadows (OF) and Edgar Santana (RP) came in fourth at their positions, and Steven Brault was sixth among starting pitchers. Dovydas Neverauskas (RP – No. 7), Pat Light (RP – No. 8) and Eury Perez (OF – No. 9) also ranked among the top 10.

TRIBE NOTES

21 UP, 7 DOWN: The Indians have posted a 21-7 record in the month of May, their first 21-win month since Aug. 1998, when they went 21-7. That year, the Tribe also went 21-9 in the month of June. A win tonight would give the Tribe their second 22-win month since Victory Field opened in 1996. That year, Indy went 22-8 in the month of June. A victory by the Tribe tonight would give them the best winning percentage in a single month (22-7, .759) in the Victory Field era.

THAT BALL, AND PLAYER, IS GONE: Elias Diaz homered on Memorial Day to give Indy a 2-0 advantage in the fourth inning at Rochester’s Frontier Field. The home run was his second of the season, with the other coming on April 29 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Pirates then recalled the backstop and transferred Jackson Williams to Indy to take Diaz’s spot on the roster yesterday. Diaz was promoted due to a hamstring strain by Chris Stewart.

DICKSON GROOVIN’: Cody Dickson has been far better in the month of May than he was in April, posting a 2-0 record and 2.77 ERA (4 ER in 13.0 IP) over four games (three starts) for the Tribe this month. In nine April appearances (one start), the southpaw went 2-2 with a 7.59 ERA (9 ER in 10.2 IP).

ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD: Jason Rogers has drastic home/road splits this season, batting .337 (30-for-89) with four doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI in 25 games at Victory Field. In 20 road affairs, he’s hitting just .210 (17-for-81) with two doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.

TRIBE NOTES

NOT TO BE GREEDY: The Indians have posted a 20-7 record in the month of May, their first 20-plus win month since April 2013 when they began the season 20-7. A win tonight would give the Tribe their first 21-win month since Aug. 1998, when they went 21-7. Indy also posted a 21-9 record in the month of June that season. If the Indians win tonight and tomorrow, they’ll match June 1996’s win total of 22 games. Two victories by the Tribe would give them the best winning percentage in a single month (22-7, .759) in the Victory Field era.

SOMETHING ABOUT NO. 29: Elias Diaz, who wears No. 29, homered yesterday (May 29) to give Indy a 2-0 advantage in the fourth inning at Frontier Field. The home run was his second of the season, with the other coming on April 29 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was recalled today by Pittsburgh in place of C Chris Stewart who was placed on the 10-day DL with a left hamstring strain.

FLIP FLOP: Last Thursday, Clay Holmes hurled six innings at Lehigh Valley before handing over to Tyler Eppler who worked a scoreless seventh. Tonight, the 24-year-old right-handers will change roles — Eppler will start and Holmes is expected to enter in relief. Both pitchers have been primary assets in Indy’s 2017 rotation.

IF ONLY: Three of Indy’s seven losses in the month of May have come with the Tribe leading after six full innings of play. Both of the Tribe’s losses at Rochester came late — one when leading after seven frames and the other when leading through eight full innings.

HONEY, I’M HOME: Jason Rogers has drastic home/road splits this season, batting .337 (29-for-86) with three doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI in 24 games at Victory Field. In 20 road affairs, he’s hitting just .210 (17-for-81) with two doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.
