TRIBE NOTES

DANNY-O LOCKING IN: After batting .138 (4-for-29) through his first eight games, Danny Ortiz has turned it on at the dish with a .467 average (7- for-15) over his last four games, backed by a three-hit effort yesterday, his first of the season. In 2016, Ortiz racked up four three-hit performances.

LEADOFF JACKS: Max Moroff’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the first yesterday made him the first Tribe player with two leadoff jacks in a single season since Kevin Melillo in 2010. In 2009, Andrew McCutchen belted two leadoff home runs, and Brian Bixler mashed three that season as well. Since 2005, Moroff is one of five Indians players with multiple leadoff bombs (Bixler – 3, McCutchen – 2, Melillo – 2, Alen Hanson – 2 [1 in 2015 & 2016]).

TWO-PLUS DINGERS: Indianapolis tallied two-plus homers as a team in a single game for the second time in 2017 after Moroff and Rogers both homered yesterday. On Opening Night against Toledo, Moroff, Rogers and Gift Ngoepe and all homered in a 7-4 win over the Mud Hens.

ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD: Jason Rogers pushed his hitting streak to six games with his 2-for-4 performance yesterday afternoon. During the stretch, he’s batting .429 (9-for-21) with two homers, one triple, and five RBI. He’s walked three times and struck out just four times as well during the run.

TRIBE NOTES

OSUNA TO THE SHOW: First baseman/outfielder Jose Osuna was recalled by the Pirates prior to yesterday’s game. He made his major league debut last night and grounded into a double play against St. Louis left-hander Brett Cecil in the top of the seventh. It was Osuna’s lone at-bat of the night as the Pirates went on to lose the contest, 2-1.

THE NEW GUY: Osuna’s replacement, Joey Terdoslavich, brought life to Indy’s lineup last night. Transferred from extended spring training to the Indians yesterday, Terdoslavich was inserted into the No. 5 hole of Andy Barkett’s lineup, playing first base. He finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI in the extra-inning loss. He became the third Tribe player this year to record three RBI in a single game (also: Austin Meadows on April 14 @ Toledo, Max Moroff on April 7 vs. Toledo).

WHERE’S THE LUCK?: Indianapolis’ one-run loss last night marked its fifth of the season, tops in the International League. Norfolk has been handed four one-run losses, the second-highest total in the league.

WE’RE NOT ALONE: Indy isn’t alone in terms of one-run losses this season. In the majors, both Toronto and San Francisco have suffered five one-run defeats. In the minors, Double-A Mobile and Single-A Advanced Wilmington have dropped five one-run games apiece. Single-A Advanced Fort Myers, an affiliate of the Twins, leads all of professional baseball with six one-run losses thus far in 2017.

TRIBE NOTES

SEE YOU IN MAY, IL WEST: After opening the season with 11 games against IL West foes, the Indians play their next 12 games against opponents outside the division. Indy hosts Durham, an IL South squad, for the next three games. Last year, the Indians went 4-2 against the Bulls, taking two of three at both The Vic and the DBAP. Indy went 18-13 against the IL South last year, the only division they owned a winning record against. Once the Bulls leave town, Indy hosts Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for three games before hitting the road to Pawtucket and Scranton for a six-game roadie. Both of those teams reside in the IL North.

TWO-OUT RBI: In Sunday’s 9-5 loss at Toledo, the Indians scored each of their five runs with two outs. Jose Osuna tallied an RBI double in the first, Gift Ngoepe and Austin Meadows knocked two-out RBI singles in the second inning, and Jason Rogers’ two-run homer in the eighth came with two outs. Prior to that game, the Tribe had totaled just nine two-out RBI through the first 10 games of the season.

HAPPY BELATED, SKIP: First-year manager Andy Barkett celebrated his 44th birthday on the league-wide off day yesterday. Baseball Reference and Wikipedia, along with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Indianapolis Indians media guides, all tab Barkett’s birthdate as Sept. 5, 1974. Somewhere early in Barkett’s playing career, a publication received the inaccurate birthdate, and it has stuck in publications throughout his playing and coaching career.
