Indulge Your Senses in Oranje 2012

This afternoon, while waiting for a friend in a hotel lobby, I caught myself staring at a painting on the wall simply labeled “Indiana Artist.”  To me, the painting did not seem too intricate.  Sure it had layers of various colors and differing brush strokes, but to me, it was nothing better than a kindergarten finger painting.  I even said to myself, “How is that art?”  Well, I answered my own question, and I can tell you where I learned the answer.

For the last eights years, I have made it a tradition to attend one of the most eclectic events in Indianapolis–an interactive, sensory overload art show better known as Oranje–Indulge Your Senses.  This is the event that put people’s tastes in perspective for me.  This is the event that helped me realize that people can look at the exact same object and see two very different things.  This is the event that made me appreciate art in metals, art in paintings, art in sculpture, fashion, and music.  This is the event that answered my question “How is that art?”  It is art because someone feels it should be appreciated.

To purchase tickets online, visit http://oranje2012.eventbrite.com/.  Prepare to pay for parking.  For more information on Oranje, visit http://www.oranjeindy.com/.    Tweet me when you get there.

DADDY at The Sanctuary April 28

Free Range Concerts is proud to present DADDY at The Sanctuary April 28. I cannot stress what an incredible evening of music this will be. If you were lucky enough to catch any of our concerts with Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack or Lisa Oliver-Gray, you know what I’m talking about. DADDY is the full band play of these outstanding singers, songsmiths and musicians. Just ask Bart Chapman.

A word to the wise, February’s concert with the Tad Robinson band sold out before the show, so don’t be caught short-handed. Get your DADDY tickets today.

For those new to DADDY, here’s the scoop:
The band DADDY comes roaring up from Nashville, Tennessee, featuring prolific recording artists Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack. Drawing on juke-joint blues, swampy-groove country and honest-to-god rock and roll, with stops in gospel and beat-poet territory along the way, DADDY has been hailed by critics and fans for electrifying live performances that embrace a wide scope of what’s great about American music. Alabama homeboy Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Kentucky-bred Womack (two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) have a musical and personal kinship that flat out clicks. Featured with DADDY is Lisa Oliver-Gray, often mentioned as “the best voice in Nashville.” Do not miss this show—make a date now with DADDY!

Stutz Artists Association’s Holiday Exhibition 2011

Skip the mall. Bypass the big-box store. Ditch the web. To pick up those truly special and locally made gifts, shoppers can kick off the holiday shopping season at the Stutz Artists Association’s Holiday Exhibition on Nov. 18. With work by approximately 50 artists working in a variety of media, the annual event gives visitors the opportunity to view original art, mingle, enjoy light refreshments and listen to music – all in a single location at the historic Stutz building.

Attendees to the event held each year on the Friday before Thanksgiving also can get a creative start on holiday shopping, with gift possibilities ranging from paintings, metal sculpture and wearable art to jewelry, cards and custom portraits. During the popular event, artists with studios in the Stutzbuilding will display their work in a single space on the second floor of the D building from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.  New this year are open studios of approximately 10 artists on the second floor of the D building, near the gallery space.

In addition, 5-inch-by-7-inch one-of-a-kind pieces by many of the artists will be available for $100 each as a fundraiser for VSA Indiana, a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities through the arts. Stutz artists are contributing 50 percent of the proceeds from their work for this effort.

One of the largest associations of working artists in Indiana, the Stutz Artists Association exists to encourage its member artists and to promote their work.  The association operates Stutz Art Space, a nonprofit gallery on the first floor of the Stutz.  The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, or by appointment.
